Types of Acupuncture

Acupuncture, its philosophy and its practice is a large and complex subject which is grounded in the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been evolving for over 2500 years. It is rooted in the Daoist philosophy of change and growth, balance and harmony. As a complementary and alternative therapy, the treatment has a holistic approach and is tailored to the individual, and does not use a 'one size fits all' approach. Despite this approach making acupuncture a square peg that is difficult to fit into the round hole of western 'pill for an ill' uniformity acupuncture has fared better at the hands of scientific research than other complementary or alternative disciplines. Acupuncture is now accepted in many quarters in the NHS as an effective treatment for pain, particularly lower back pain and has been sanctioned by NICE. In France it has aso been used nationally to help treat addictions such as smoking.

Usually a mixture of different acupuncture disciplines are used depending on patients individual needs and health problems.

In 5 Elements or "Phases" Acupuncture explains it's process as being a unique balance of the movement of the energy of 5 Elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood)  The diagnosis is based on understanding each person's core of individuality, potential, and how this has been influenced by the physical and emotional factors. The treatment focuses on strengthening any inner weakness and helping life to flow more smoothly.

Traditional Chinese Medicne Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture is good for focussing on physical ailments such as high blood pressure and muscle and joint pain or stimulating specific organs to do their job more efficiently. The TCM model associates symptoms with patterns and treatment focuses on balancing the functions of the body and its interaction with the outside world. It is widely practiced in modern China, Europe, America and elsewhere. It can be used in assessing constitution, and in helping with problems or symptoms which need to be addressed more quickly.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture is a safe and holistic treatment which aims to rejuvenate the skin, reduce fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of the aging process. It is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to more conventional treatments which doesn’t carry the risk of the side-effects of botox injections or a surgical facelift, and has been endorsed by celebrities such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cher.

Cosmetic acupuncture works in tandem with traditional acupuncture treatment, the latter working on the overall balance of the individuals energy and systems. Cosmetic acupuncture starts with diagnosis of general health and skin conditions and involves the use of massage and needles as appropriate.
